Two coastal residences that redefine the relationship between architecture and the natural landscape of the Greek island of Lefkada.
Nestled along a serene coastline on the southern tip of Lefkada, this residential project by ss.mm design balances contemporary design with the timeless beauty of the natural landscape. The architecture emphasizes simplicity, sustainability, and seamless indoor-outdoor living.
The design draws inspiration from traditional coastal homes with a modern sensibility. Clean, rectilinear forms are carefully placed along the natural slope to minimize disruption to the terrain. Stone-clad walls reference local building traditions, while smooth white stucco sections introduce geometric clarity, a striking interplay of rustic and contemporary that evokes permanence and connection to the landscape.
The site was developed to preserve native vegetation and enhance natural vistas, surrounded by indigenous shrubs and olive trees that maintain the wild character of the coastline. Wide cantilevered pergolas draped in bougainvillea provide shade and cooling while creating a visually defining focal point, a semi-outdoor living area that becomes the heart of the home.
Interior spaces transition effortlessly to the outdoors through expansive glass openings, with the living area stepping directly onto a sun-soaked terrace with uninterrupted sea views. Bedrooms are arranged to provide privacy and comfort, with selective openings that allow light in while maintaining seclusion.
Sustainability is embedded throughout: locally sourced stone reduces the project's carbon footprint, native landscaping limits irrigation needs, and passive design strategies including cross-ventilation and the pergola ensure year-round comfort.
